Pediatric After Hours
Pediatric After Hours is a after hour pediatric office managed by the Medical & Surgical Clinics of Southern Maryland; centrally located in Waldorf, Maryland. They are here to care for your sick child week-nights and week-ends when your regular pediatrician is not available. Our goal is to offer top quality, convenient medical care when your child has a “can’t wait” problem.
Hours of Operation
Monday-Friday: 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
What kind of services do we provide?
Our pediatricians are trained to care for infants and children up to the age of 18.
We offer immediate care for:
• Rashes
• Fevers
• Minor sprains, burns, scrapes, and cuts
• Minor eye injuries
• Mild asthma attacks
How do we work with your regular doctor?
The first workday after we have treated you child, we will fax a summary sheet to your regular pediatrician. We encourage you to get all follow-up care from your regular pediatrician.
What kind of payment is expected?
We are able to direct-bill most insurance plans. However, not all insurance plans cover our kind of service. Please check with your insurance plan if you have any questions.
Patients are expected to pay any co-payments or other fees prior to being seen.
What kinds of care do we NOT provide?
Anything that can wait one day. In other words we DO NOT do:
• Physical exams of any kind
• Immunizations
• Allergy shots
A New Way to Communicate
At the Medical & Surgical Clinics of Southern Maryland we’re always searching for a better way to serve our patients. As you may’ve noticed we’ve started asking patients for email addresses.
In the upcoming year, we will utilize email to send clinic newsletters, office updates and office forms you request instead of faxing them. Sending you communication via email helps lower administrative costs and you receive the information in a timely manner.
When you receive an email it will most likely be sent from a Practice Manager’s work email address (ending in southernmarylandhospital.com) or our collaborative email address, medsurgclincsofsomd@gmail.com. For all medical inquires please do not email the Practice Manager or the collaborative email, we hope to integrate a patient portal into our website (www.familymedicalcarecenters.com) soon to serve those needs. Email will primarily serve to communicate about administrative changes such as payment options and collection fees. If you need a prescription refill or need to reschedule an appointment, please call your medical office for immediate assistance.
The next time you see us, please make sure you update your contact information with a current email address. Our Medical Receptionists will be happy to assist you.
How to Schedule Your Appointment at our Primary Care Sites
Everyday our front desk receptionists have the pleasure of speaking with our patients to schedule appointments. But very often they run into a challenge, is the patient truly requesting a physical/well visit or a sick visit?
A physical is a once a year appointment to update immunizations, perform screening tests, disease prevention consultation and a physical examination of your body.
A sick visit can be scheduled on short notice when a problem arises, such as flu like symptoms or an ache in your joints. Scheduling this appointment helps the physician cater the entire visit to your concerns.
Why does this matter?
If I’m in the exam room for a physical and I tell the physician about my pain in my shoulder, why can’t they address that issue at that time?
When scheduling your appointment a certain amount of time and resources are allotted for you to get the best care. When a sick visit is scheduled and the issue noted in your chart the Physician is better equipped to address your concerns and direct your appointment time to your concern rather than delay the care of the patient following your appointment. We’ve all sat in a reception area waiting an hour or more to be seen and now you know why.
Also depending on your insurance company you may only be allotted one physical for the year, scheduling an additional physical could result in additional out of pocket costs for the office visit and lab work.
The best way to avoid confusion on your insurance benefits is to contact your insurance company. Our staff will check your eligibility and benefits prior to your appointment, but if your physical turns into a sick visit you may owe more than just a co-pay.
If your physical is once a year,
Generally you’re in the clear.
But if you start to feel a little ill,
Make a sick appointment to avoid a huge bill.
